Our body posture is our unconscious communicator to others; without moving our lips we are giving off signals of how we are feeling about ourselves or the situation. Imagine that you meet a friend in the street. Their shoulders are slumped and head dropped down – not their normal posture. They see you and give a smile and then have a chat. They may sound ok – however their body is not congruent with their words. They are unconsciously giving off signals that something is getting them down.
A month or so ago, I was chatting to a lovely lady I have met through networking. She was telling me about her business – it all sounded positive – however it just didn’t fit with her body language and she came across rather “needy”. Through gently questioning it transpired that her business was struggling. Once she realised that her body was giving away her anxiety and unattractive neediness, she took positive action and within a few weeks – her phone was ringing!
Your physiology subtly gives people messages – what messages are you giving? Are they positive, negative, anxious or happy? Our bodies and minds are absolutely interlinked – our body responds to our thoughts and feelings and vice versa. For example, when we are stressed our body may react with high blood pressure or painful muscle spasms. However having a relaxing bath or an energetic walk – this can clear our mind.
So here is a quick exercise for you to feel uplifted by changing your posture: Sit or stand tall with relaxed shoulders, symmetrically aligned (imagine a plumb line down your middle). Ensure you are balanced (no crossing legs/arms or leaning to one side), feet on the floor, back straight and relaxed, head up, eyes looking slightly up with a big smile on your face. Imagine you have a warm glow in your solar plexus (mid way between your naval and sternum) that is strong…..how does that feel? Our unconscious mind will think “hey, I feel good.”
