Being Inspired

Who inspires you?

Each evening, over the past week, I have been watching inspiring individuals and teams giving their all, attempting to win Olympic Gold Medals. The dedication each one of these sports men and women has is incredible – the hours they have invested in training over the past years; and the pain they have probably endured is immense.

I am sure many people have been truly inspired by the many Great Brits that have won Medals for us; As Jessica Ennis said “Hopefully we are inspiring a new generation and it’ll have a knock-on effect for the next few years.”

So who and what inspire you?

Perhaps it is the attributes or skills of certain people; reading autobiographies of people that have overcome adversity? Watching people such as our athletes achieve success.

Or it may be a place that you have visited – for me it’s the amazing architecture of Antoni Gaudi; especially his Casa Batlló in Barcelona. How he has evoked nature in the form of the building, the curves of the walls and ceilings makes the building seem like a live organism, the structure of the building bringing natural light and air to the building sustainably – way ahead of his time. May be you get inspiration from the wonders of nature?

Is it music that taps into your emotions or art that arouses your own creativity? Listening to Heather Small from M People with her rich soul voice or looking at great art, for me. I love the colour and detail of the pre-Raphaelite paintings, such as Bottelli – beautiful.

And of course there are great orators that can move and inspire many people just by their passion, message and powerful language; encouraging the listeners to reflect and transform their lives. There are plenty of people to listen to on Ted Talks: William Kamkwamba how he harnessed the wind; Matt Cutts who tried something new for 30 days; The Buddhist monk Matthieu Ricard who shares the habits of happiness.

Being inspired can encourage us to push our own boundaries – getting us out of our comfort zones. Inspiration can spark us to take action, turning dreams to reality, building up our motivation and often we can even surpass our own expectations. Being inspired can help us persevere and go that extra mile.

Watching the Olympics has reminded me of the amazing feats of people. And what helps these people achieve? Have you noticed who they thank when they are interviewed? After their family – it’s usually their coach. These amazing atheletes often achieve because they have someone there to support them, challenge them, encourage them, notice what they do when they do or don’t get the results they want. Coaching are for those that are committed to achieve. Is that you?
