Would you like to ensure that you have a great 2012? You may be happy to know that it’s not about New Year Resolutions. Having reached a few weeks into January each year and discovering that yet again, I hadn’t achieved my Resolution, I decided to come up with an alternative. For the last few years I’ve found that my alternative has worked so much better for me. So this year I thought I’d share it with you.

Each year I review my values – what is important for me in my life. (Our values rarely change – unless we experience a life changing event – however it is always good to review and prioritise).

Once reviewed, I then rate these from 1 (low) to 10 (high) and if any are lower than 9, then I decide what I want to do to ensure that I improve my rating so I have more of this value in my life.

In this week’s video (longer than normal), I describe how  you can discover your own values. Your values are the foundation of your character; things which you believe are important; the things which motivate you; the things that you give priority to and determine how you make decisions.

Many people are not consciously aware of their own values and these do have a big effect on us and our lives. If our values are missing from our lives, life can be very frustrating – for example, when I worked in the Corporate sector, due to a take-over, my independence was diminished, causing me to (thankfully) change my career-path. It’s also important to understand that we can unknowingly take on board others’ values, especially from childhood, and this can lead to stress and frustration in our lives.

You may find that there are many lists of values on the internet that you can trawl through. However, having worked with many clients to discover their values, it is more beneficial to identify your own words – you will resonate with them more, rather than choosing from a list.

Explicitly identifying your own values can often be very revealing and may give you quite an insight into what makes you tick . By living life aligned to your own values really does ensure that you have a great year.
